Derrick is the second oldest of seven siblings raised by a single mother. He was frequently involved in gang warfare and street fighting. He relocated to Houston with his family in 1998 and began training in boxing and martial arts.
Lewis began boxing training at the age of 17 and was preparing for his first amateur fight when the gym unexpectedly closed down. He was charged with severe assault and placed on probation two weeks after graduating from high school. Derrick then went to Kilgore College. He broke his probation and received a five-year prison sentence, but only served three and a half. A friend then introduced him to mixed martial arts.
