After completing HAVO, he spent two years at the football residential school Go Ahead Eagles in Deventer, where he earned his VWO diploma. In his teenage years, he played football for the club’s junior team. He also played amateur football for FC Hilversum. In 1984, he moved to Mallorca and worked as a hotel sports entertainer for seven months.
